Motif: I didn't know. Someone with unusual cloth, dark colored skin, playing a medieval flute. Katana size tsuba

I would be happy about ideas on these three pieces.

Chris,

second one: I would not believe in the MEI as it looks as if it was done at a later date after the latest TAGANE marks. The scene might be a hunter with a dog, imitating birdcalls or something similar (the hunter, not the dog).

Hello Jean,

could you explain what you mean? I took a (maybe) better picture of the mei.  :)

The flute looks like similar to that one.

I didn't found a medieval Japanese flute like this.

No with Choij oil because they where rather dirty with dust.

(Ne mit Choi weil sie ziemlich schmutzig waren. Staubverkrustet. 40 Jahre lang in ne Vitrine gelegen.

Des Speckige geht wieder weg  ;-) )

Chris,

the picture you are showing is the "Rattenkönig von Hameln" who is not typical Japanese, nor is the flute.

On the TSUBA the place for the signature on the SEPPA-DAI is partly taken by the TAGANE. An original MEI (can only guess TOSHI TOSHI) would have been only partly visible, I think.

Hello Jean,

i know that it is the Rattenfänger von Hameln. I didn't meant the Rattenfänger but the Flute. The Flute is not typical Japanese in my opinion.

Maybe the "Hunter" is a portuguese?

I found now a Kozuka in the Carlo Monzino Collection Book.

On site 80, lot 342.

"Foreigner standing blowing a flageolet while a dog walks at his side,.."

Looks like a similar motif.

Found Netsuke with the same theme. The dutch in Japan.

I found a text that 1782 80 javanese are slaved from the dutch as sailors on their ships. They where ongoing to Japan. Maybe the foreigner is a javanese (dark skin,...) I search further. It's thriling  :)
