dominnimod Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 Hey, Here i found a deplorable katana shaped blade in relic condition, with rust and pitting everywhere, my question is,what are the chances of this to be a genuine Japanese blade?the 'tsuka' looks pretty western and handmade Just curiosity, any help is appreciated Quote
paulb Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 Hi Josh Impossible to say with total certainty but I dont think this is authentic. The shape looks totally wrong, the placement of the shinogi the proportions etc all suggest it is something else to me. Quote
dominnimod Posted February 20, 2016 Author Report Posted February 20, 2016 Maybe a dha from birmania? Quote
paulb Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 I originally thought that too. But most Dha I have seen have greater curvature and widen towards the tip. I am also not sure I have seen one with a shinogi type ridgeline. But I havent studied dha in any detail so it is another possibility Quote
christianmalterre Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 i´d rather tend for a sheppards cane-blade here! (southern France-Andorra-Aragon) unfortunately the scabbard is missing. cool find eitherway...! (do please not underestimate these!-such is sought by collectors!) (the fixing on 12 o´clock is a definite indicator it is authentic) Christian Quote

ROKUJURO Posted February 20, 2016 Report Posted February 20, 2016 Josh,at first glance this weapon does not remind me of a Japanese blade. From the photos I cannot see a KATANA shape or a clear SHINOGI. However, on some of the photos there might be a hint to a hardened edge. With a Rockwell testing device, you may have that tested. If this really once was a Japanese blade, I think it is ruined now.But as Christian wrote, this might as well be an historically interesting European weapon. Please compare with 'Bauernwehr' or 'Langes Messer' of the late Middle ages. Quote
