caligari1138 Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 I recently purchased what looks to be an antique sword of Asian origin. I know nothing about it's age or provenance. I am not even sure if it is real or a replica. I would appreciate any information that you could offer, or guide me to an appropriate source to find the information myself (forum, website, book, etc.) Quote
Andi B. Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 Hello, unfortunately it obviously a fake. Please check the following link: http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/repro.htm Try to see real Japanese mountings and blades (you can find images on the dealers websites in the link section of this forum) and compare. Greg F Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 Hi Jeff, The advice Andi has given is sound. In the links he mentioned for dealers above you will be able to find plenty of great books to learn what you need to know so you dont waste money on fakes as well as getting familiar with the real stuff. This place (Nmb) is one of if not the best resource one could have available as a Nihonto enthusiast. All the best. Greg Quote
caligari1138 Posted February 8, 2016 Author Report Posted February 8, 2016 Thanks for the quick response and information. Fortunately, I didn't spend much on this sword. (25 bucks). I had a feeling that it was some sort of fake or replica, but a replica of what? I had hoped I could get a little more information on the country of origin and possible age of this particular sword. I could find nothing on the website suggested that addresses my sword in particular, nor can I find one that looks like it on the internet. I have seen real Nihonto in person and knew it did not look like an any authentic Katana or Japanese military sword I have seen, so I had hoped that someone had seen one like mine to give me a little accurate analysis of what type of fake or replica it is and country of origin. thanks again Quote
Brian Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 It's Chinese...designed to fool someone into thinking it is an antique Japanese sword. Quote

I think it is not based on a real model. It's doesn't seem to be a "replica" or "fake" - it looks like a sword dummy with a "Japanese Style". So I can't imagine that it is possible to identify its orign (most probably somewhere in China or South East Asia...). Quote
