Your sword is signed by Shoda Masafusa. He was a properly trained swordsmith under Hayama Masatsuru and later under 23rd Gen Fujiwara Kanefusa in Seki.

He made Gendaito during the war and became RJT (he also made showato in Seki). There is a bit on him in Slough pp.97-98.

Regards,

Hi all. Thank you for your replies thus far. It seems a bit odd that a RJT would retain his art name from the war and continue to make swords with this name up until 1975 at least ?

Masafusa did make swords after the war and used the same name - as did more war time smiths. I am saying that the mei itself looks suspect. I've owned a masafusa and seen a few more - including post war - and he strikes his mei far more fluently and confidently than this example.

Thank you once again. I did find this one by MASAFUSA dated the same year, 1975. There is quite a difference !

I think I may defer on this example !

Thank you once again. Yes, that is the decision I have come to. It also seems a little odd that it is listed in Australia but will be sent from Japan !
