Hi Carlo, torise shell was cerianly used in koshirae, just as horn was, so or the most part, as a decoration or trim on a koshirae. Googling the net, I found a few references thought the one I wanted mosy was not working.

 

At Ed Marshall's site is this amazing koshirae.

At Tokugawa is this horse riding matchlock with a small amount of tortise shell

and also at Eokugawa is this Tortoiseshell work black lacquered sheath Aikuchi Tanto Fitting/ This is the link that does not work for me. In the Reference ssection, look down to TANTO_K957 and you will at least see what I mean.

Tostise shell was also used as a design and many Nobuie and Edo Tosho tsuba are famous for the design.

Hey Rich,

Danny has a great site, but the shibayama koshirae is on my site. :lol:

So is the Nata on one of the other posts.

 

Here is a photo of tortoise shell used for the Hatome on a shirasaya.
