LOL. well if the sword is in good/new polish and goes for a hundred bucks or so, it wouldn't be bad to look at for study. Trying to start a new study group and wouldn't be bad to have swords on the table to show work and flaws.

It was a great looking blade with much complex hataraki to look at... until I saw the hairline crack.   Anyway I wound not be surprised to see it online again so save yourself some trouble and remember the pictures.

Jean,   I didn't take any pictures except for the hagire before sending it back to the seller, it was in a clean old polish with with lots of nie and sunagashi.   It was a steal until the hagire reared it's head.  Here a couple more low kb photo's from online.

Best Regards,

I had the embarrassing situation of selling a sword with a hagire on eBay.  I never noticed it, but the buyer did and I gave him a full return.  Unfortunately, eBay didn't rebate their charges to him (international buyer), so he lost a few bucks.  Next thing I know, he gave me negative feedback.   Can't say I didn't have it coming..... The interesting thing is that it received good NTHK papers with the hagire and the shinsa team didn't notice it either!

Bob,

That's the problem of putting to Shinsa unpolished blades. Shinsa should only accept swords in very good polish. Old polish means nothing as it is the case of all swords.

I bought years ago a NTHK kanteisho Kanetsune katana, once polished it had 3 hagire....

Christies once sold an Ichimonji with a hagire.  It was not caught until after the catalog was printed.  They did a quick disclaimer before bidding started, calling it a transverse crack.  Their sword expert said it was not a hagire, because it did not go through the nioi guchi.

The sword had Juyo papers.  Therefore, there is a good possibility that the hagire was newly conceived.  Someone paid over $30K for it.

I was going to bid on it, until I caught this.

Looks like a hagire to me:

"Caveat Emptor"- Buyer Beware, has become almost a universal law.
