Justin Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Just wanted to get people's opinion on the mei on the second fuchi (with Kanzan). Big name. Most likely gimei, but would just like to check. http://tosogucollection.com/2014/03/09/ ... han-fuchi/ Thanks for any help. Quote
kaigunair Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Away from my books, but by the work itself, it looks pretty convincing! Very nice collection, all three of them. Quote
Stephen Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 glad i can still pull somethings out of the brain pan. remember these viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17774&st=0&sk=t&sd=a Quote
Justin Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 Thanks Junichi. I am checking the books now too, so hopefully I'll pull up some other examples for comparison. Yes Stephen. Dale has some great fuchi (and many other fittings) in his collection. Although I wasn't able to reunite these fuchi with their matching kashira, at least I could put them together in a custom box. I think they work well together. Quote
Soshin Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 Hi Justin, Not much help but this is a nice set of lone fuchi. Thanks for sharing. Quote
Ford Hallam Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 These are scans of images of two fairly well known and published Joi kozuka. Based on the way the mei are cut I'd suggest the orphan fuchi is still without a home The mei seems to be rather awkwardly cut and not very deeply either, making it look almost scratched on rather than chiseled. As one of the Nara San Saku Sugiura Joi was a popular artist to fake, probably even in his own lifetime. There's nice write up on Joi and one of these kozuka on Ginza Choshuya's site, with some more images. Translation helpfully provided by Paul Martin. Here's a link Quote
Justin Posted March 11, 2014 Author Report Posted March 11, 2014 Thanks Ford. I agree that the mei is not very well cut compared to the kozuka in your post. The size of the mei on my fuchi is tiny (difficult to show in photos). I think this is gimei, however I assume that sometimes small mei in a confined space are different to much larger mei where space isn't a problem? Quote
Ford Hallam Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I think this is gimei, however I assume that sometimes small mei in a confined space are different to much larger mei where space isn't a problem? So while you claim you accept this is gimei you also imply the possibility this inept mei is yet still genuine because of the restricted space..... I have nothing more to add. Quote
Soshin Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 Hi Justin, With such a high profile name there was likely three or even more quality levels for gimei work. A case in point can also be made with Yamakichibei tsuba. The early one on my website was likely a high quality gimei made around the same time as the Shodai Yamakichibei. This is noted in the book Owari to Mikawa no Tanko. Quote
Justin Posted March 12, 2014 Author Report Posted March 12, 2014 Ford, I accept that is gimei. I was talking in general terms about mei in restricted space being different to mei on items with more space. Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 12, 2014 Report Posted March 12, 2014 I think tanzakumei must fit one of the smallest spaces available and even so they still meet criteria of how the mei should appear. John Quote
Ford Hallam Posted March 12, 2014 Report Posted March 12, 2014 Sorry Justin, I didn't mean to sound snarky. Quote
docliss Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 I have been hors de combat for several weeks but am now able, rather belatedly, to post images of a pair of fuchi-gashira that are very similar to Justin’s orphaned fuchi #2. Rather than a mei and seal on the koshi, this fuchi bears a nijimei on the tenjō, which has vertical yasurime – a kantei feature of Joi fuchi. John L. Quote
Justin Posted April 22, 2014 Author Report Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks John. Are these papered? Quote
docliss Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 No, they ere not papered Justin. Regards, John L. Quote
