Ken-Hawaii Posted January 9, 2014 Report Posted January 9, 2014 One of our Senior Advisers brought in a katana for kantei this past weekend. Nothing unusual there, except that neither he, nor any of our other members could read the mei. In the decade I've been a member, this was a first; three of our Senior Advisers used to perform shinsa in Japan. Anyway, my wife snapped a photo with her phone, so the image quality isn't perfect, but I'd like to know if any NMB member can read this mei. Thanks! Ken Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted January 10, 2014 Author Report Posted January 10, 2014 Thanks, Chris. I've passed it along to Ed Masaki. Aloha! Ken Quote
cabowen Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 I should mention it looks like an obvious fake... Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted January 10, 2014 Author Report Posted January 10, 2014 Yeah, that's what we thought, too. It belongs to a neighbor whose husband just died, & she asked Ed to get it & a Showato out of her house. Not in good shape at all, either, & the mei was so badly done that we all thought it was likely a fake. It was just strange that, with all our in-house expertise, no one could translate the old Kanji. Ken Quote
uwe Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 Seems tachi-mei. That should it narrow down a bit....... Quote
Jean Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 It is tachi mei, that´s all. If Gimei it could have been a mumei katana with added tachi mei, or a mumei tachi with added mei who knows... Quote
