Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 my sony point and shoot digital camera went kaput over the weekend.......looks like it can't focus anymore. Must be one time too many traveling through the airport security scan. Question for the list............. point and shoot digital camera vs the digital SLR . Any difference in pic quality ? ( assuming the megapixel # is the same ) In my younger days ( 20 years ago ).........I have the full Nikon stuffs, F1, F2, Nikormet with all sort of Nikkor lens, they are sitting in the closet gathering dusts........... Question............does the Nikon digital SLR camera body compatible with those old lens ? If yes, then i may ditch the point and shoot version and go " professional " again . Milt THE ronin Quote
Rich T Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 in my opinion Milt, SLR's with good to better quality lenses will eat the small cameras everr time, more control over focus, DOF, apature ect. Point and clicks just take happy snaps. Rich Quote
Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 question is............ would the new digital SLR body takes the OLD lens or they come out with NEW lens ? the point and shoot version seems to work well with close -up, the 5 megapixel Sony one was used by none other than Big Mo on his web site 2 years ago. Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 In case of Nikon D2Xs. http://nikonimaging.com/global/products ... xs_16p.pdf thanks Nobody............this is very very cool. Page 8 seems to list all the old Nikkor lens but I cannot be sure as the words are very small ( can't read it ) guess I'll truck on down ( that's 60's lingo ) to Best Buy and suss ( Ozzie's speak ? ) it out. Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 arhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, find this............ http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2 I think D80 is more my speed ( read ....... depth of wallet ) D2Xs with 12.4 megapixel at 4699 , wow......nice but milt THE ronin Quote
DavidF Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 I have the Nikon D50. It is a very nice and very affordable DSLR. It produces very beautiful images and it is compatible with other Nikon lenses. Even a modest DSLR is better than a normal digital camera. The reason is because the photodiode in a normal digital camera is about the size (and shape) of a pencil eraser, while the diode of a DSL is about 1" by .75" depending upon the size of the shutter. I highly recommend the Nikon D50. DaveF. Quote
Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 " It produces very beautiful images and it is compatible with other Nikon lenses " thanks, Dave, you positive they are compatible with the OLD nikkor lens ? I have a whole range of that stuff ( from micro all the way to the 300 mm )........... I am leaning towards the D80 , 10 megapixel seems to be a good number and cost less than the D2Xs ( 12.4 ) at 5 X price !! Milt THE ronin Quote
Nobody Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 I have Nikon D2H and D100. Generally almost all types of Nikon lenses can be phsycally mounted, but old type lenses might have limitations in automatic functions. As for Nikon D80, see pate 7/9. http://nikonimaging.com/global/products ... 80_16p.pdf Quote
Bungo Posted September 18, 2006 Author Report Posted September 18, 2006 thanks AGAIN, Nobody.......... the D80 that comes with the zoom lens goes for 1200 or so suggested retail, bet you we can get it cheaper at various discount stores. I may go with that set up and then try my old Nikkor lens and see what happens............... milt THE ronin Quote
David Flynn Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Milt before you buy it, why not ask the dealer David Quote

Guido Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Milt, if you're going to buy a digital SLR, I highly recommend this software: http://www.dxo.com/us/photo. I use it for two or so years now, and the results are amazing. This, and Photoshop Elements, will guarantee the best possible pictures of your next butterfly Tsuba . Quote
Bungo Posted September 20, 2006 Author Report Posted September 20, 2006 thank you all for the suggestion............. I have been trying to get " bargain " ( the Nikon D 80 )on e-bay, but seems like they are all priced at full retail and a few that " act " like auction with no reserve..........ummm, there's always that " new member with zero rating " that bid it up to the retail price. So I play along but you never know, I may get lucky. Anyway, most likely it's going to be Best Buy or Target. Question for Noboby particularly......... what's the best set up for the Nikon sysytem ? the D80 with 18-135 mm Nikkor lens ? Which lens you use for close up pic ? those micro ( or is it macro ) lens ? or the zoom is good enough, just magnify and zoom in at a particular area as we do with the point and shoot camera ?? Milt THE ronin Quote
David Flynn Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Macro is great. The only problem with it is light source. If you are using onboard flash, it can miss your object. However if you have a good light source, then macro is great. David Quote

Hi milt, At this point I will buy "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor ED 18~200mm F3.5~5.6G (IF)" or "18-135 mm" as the second choise, if I were you. However, as my usual objects are landscapes, unfortunately I do not have any micro lenses. I usulally use 24-120 mm for close up pics like below. It is enough for my purpose, though it is not sharp as well as dark. Quote
Brian Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 I have an old Sony Cybershot 3MP, and a Canon 300D Digital SLR. I use the Canon now almost exclusively for my photos, but I must admit that without a macro lens for my Canon DSLR, whenever I am doing any close up work, I find myself grabbing the Sony which does great close-up work up to about 8cm. I would say that if you plan on doing a lot of close up tsuba and blade photography, then you will find you are going to need a lens with a good macro function. You are not going to get the same results zooming in as much as possible from a greater distance. Spend the extra and get a macro lens, you won't regret it. Brian Quote

Usually you can pick up a good package with the D50 or D70 accompanied with a nice Nikkor 18-70mm. This is what I got from Akihabara and the fact that the other lenses fit was a bonus that I didn't expect. I am a point and shoot merchant most of the time so I am not up on all the fancy F-stops and blah blah blah... Cheers 船長 Quote
Bungo Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 anyone knows the retail price of the Nikkor 18-135 mm AF DX lens ( they don't list the suggested retail price on Nikon site ) ? since I don't seem to be able to get the set up " below retail " on e-bay, I am thinking may be I have better luck sniping the D-80 body cheap and then buy the above lens separately. milt THE cheap ronin Quote

Nobody Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Nobody et al,is the price good ? free shipping, no sales tax. Hi Milt, Don't ask me about the price. Unfortunately I am in Japan. BTW, the 80D seems to be with 18-200 mm lens. That's better. Quote
sencho Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 I may be looking for one too Milt.... got back from Monaco last night and I think my case and a bunch of my stuff has ended up in god knows where.... probably halfway to Calcutta or somehwere! Bungo Posted September 30, 2006 Author Report Posted September 30, 2006 gang, just got my Nikon D-80 with the 18-200 mm zoom lens. It's freaking complicated but I am starting out with the everything " auto " mode just to get the feel of it. So far I can take very sharp pic of tsuba and then close up on the detail and save the " edited/zoom in " pic ( just like the good ole point and shoot ). Question............. since we can do that zoom in close up editing thingie, what's the need for a separate special macro close up lens ? ideas ? Milt THE ronin Quote
Nobody Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Question............. since we can do that zoom in close up editing thingie, what's the need for a separate special macro close up lens ? ideas ? I only know two points. 1. Generally, micro (macro?) lenses can take a close-up at shorter distance compared with ordinary lenses of the same focal length. 2. The optical design of micro lenses are optimized at relatively short distance for close-up. Quote
Bungo Posted September 30, 2006 Author Report Posted September 30, 2006 so the new technoloy makes the micro close up lens obsolete unless you really want very very close up like the detail on the nanako........ Nobody san, since you have the Nikon system. ............have a question for you. I did the zoom in thing and saved the pic..........no problem there. But...... when I want to zoom in further, I can see the pic( really closed up ) on the monitor screen just fine, but the camera would not allow me to save that picture. Do you know why ? Do I have to go to the menu/set up to enable/disable something ? Milt THE ronin Quote

Ordinary auto focus mode does not allow shutter to work when focus is not gained. Quote
Bungo Posted September 30, 2006 Author Report Posted September 30, 2006 ummmmmmm, I am not sure the auto/manual shutter has anything to do with it. I am trying to " trim " the pictures I already have saved on the memory card. I saved a few " enlarged " ones but when I tried to further " trim/enlarge" the pics, I can see the further enlarged pic but camera would not allow me to save. That's the problem......... p.s. reading the manual...................arrrrrhhhhhhhh milt Quote
