Hello gentlelmen

i have a tassel that i need some advice on, it appears to be a late war or a naval type, but is shorter and abit thicker then the normal dimentions.

i was thinking it may be for a crew gunto because it matches the dementions of my short gunto i have

i look forward to your comments

regards Hamish

Hi Hamish,

i once saw a blue/brown tassel on a sabre that was a bit shorter and seemed a bit thicker than "normal".

I don't know if this is the correct reason...maybe these are just a variety an officer could buy if he wanted a neater/tighter less "swingy" tassel...?

Good morning Hamish,

Just a wild thought.

Have a look under the Fusa tassle at the very base and see if you can make out how the himo cord is secured to the Fusa.

If both fixings are the same colour and knotting, then it is reasonable to suppose it was intended from day one, if one were different then it is possible to suppose shortened at a later date for whatever reason.

Cheers

Hi Malcolm

I have had a look at what i think you were aiming at, and it appears to be the same colour. bbbuttt when i looked at the other 2 tassals i have noticed that the company grade tassal has a yellow coloured thread and the naval tassal has one end tied off with blue coloured thread. does this mean any thing?

Hamish,

whenever I have seen a tassel still on it's original sabre, it has been wrapped tightly around the hand guard and just the tassels left free....not hanging full length like this. Can't say if this applies to all sabres.

Regards,
