I've read there has been issues regarding shipping nihonto from Australia to international locations using Australia post and other shipping services. I would like to hear from those with experience what's the best way to send swords overseas from Australia? And any further instructions to avoid hassles with the postal services.

Cheers

Hi mate,

I recently (only a few months ago) sent a Wak to the UK through Australia Post with no problems. The Wak had to be labelled properly (for UK Customs) and the recipient was a licenced Martial Arts instructor. I know he received the sword in good time and (to the best of my knowledge), there were no problems from UK Customs. The only concern I had was the lack of ‘Tracking’ with Aust Post services but it was sent 'Registered Post', otherwise all was good.

Hi Jeremy,

I find the hardest part is convincing the Australia Post staff that the country in question (usually Japan or US) allows the import of sword. Just tell them you have sent swords there before and never had a problem. That usually helps. Make sure it is packed really well and there is no chance of the point coming out the end of the box, etc. I always describe the item correctly, e.g. Antique Japanese Sword, more than 100 years old.

You shouldn't have any problems. I like to use Express Courier International (equivalent to EMS). Costs a bit more, but has full tracking and fast delivery. Just ask at the post office.

Good luck!

Hi Jeremy

I was the recipient of the wakizashi from Australia and it arrived with no problem

There are circumstances when importing into the UK is are acceptable. I can't remember them all, you need to look on the UK customs website for the full details:

You can import if you are a Martial Arts instructor which was the case with me. I am in an association recognised by a UK Governing body and have insurance

You can import if you have an antique shop

If you or the recipient complies with these criteria or know someone who does then all OK

I imported a Katana & Wakizashi from Japan and this was held in customs until I could prove I was a Martial Arts instructor then it was released Ok

Jeremy,

In answer to your question; I wrote that it was an antique blade etc.. but I also wrote what the buyer wanted (very important), because at the end of the day, it is they who have to deal with their Customs Services and taxes laws..

If you fine a better system, please let us know. I am not a dealer and very infrequently sell/ send swords overseas, so each time is an effort..

Hey guys, ended up sending my sword to the US through Australia Post ECI service which is similar to EMS. I put the description as "old forged metalwork" and I had no problem with post office staff or Customs problems in the US. For now I'll be sticking with this service in the future if I need to send swords overseas. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Regards

Jeremy
