Veli Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Hello Gentlemen! Here's a signature of an Omi Yari owned by my friend. I haven't been able to translate it (the mei is quite corroded), so I thought to ask some expert help... BR, Veli Quote
Gilles Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Dear veli, I must say that I can't see a thing on the picture. There is a shade that hide nearly everything. Have you another picture ? Regards, Quote
Veli Posted July 7, 2013 Author Report Posted July 7, 2013 Hi Gilles, Sorry, the Mei is just as corroded and hard to read as the picture shows... The last two kanji are somewhat readable, however. BR, Veli Quote
Gilles Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Dear Veli, I will say MITSU and perhaps KUNI. Quote
NihontoEurope Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Veli, I think KANE 包 and maybe SUE 末 or NAGA 長. It depends really on where the last kanji ends and would really be easier to match when in hand by hight and size match of the other kanji. Does the last kanji end where it is seen or would it continue? I think it is a start for you. What do you think? /Martin Quote
Veli Posted July 7, 2013 Author Report Posted July 7, 2013 Thanks Gilles and Martin, I was thinking along the lines of MitsuX and Kanenaga myself, but I do not feel comfortable with those guesses... By the way, it seems that there have been around seven or eight kanji in the mei, and the second kanji is very probably 田. I wonder if it could be Dotanuki or Shimada BR, Veli Quote
NihontoEurope Posted July 7, 2013 Report Posted July 7, 2013 Veli, Impossible to make guesses on almost any kanji, but when you say TA/DA can you perhaps see TAKA as in TAKADA? /Martin Quote
Veli Posted July 7, 2013 Author Report Posted July 7, 2013 Yup, I checked that possibility (Takada) too, but I could not find Takada smiths with Mei resembling the last two kanji... The second to last kanji looks a lot like 厄 but that does not make sense as a Mei... BR, Veli Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 The last kanji has a feeling of 作 to me. Or could it be 包家 ie Kaneie? Quote
NihontoEurope Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 Veli, What about MINAMOTO KIYOMARO SEI at the end (signed KUBOTA)? /Martin Quote
Veli Posted July 8, 2013 Author Report Posted July 8, 2013 Thank you Piers and Martin, and thank you Brian for the grayscaling of the pic. If I assume that the second to last kanji is 包 and the second kanji is田, then the only match I find is: 粟田口藤原包綱 Awataguchi Fujiwara Kanetsuna... a Shinto smith Not impossible but not convincing either... Veli Quote
Veli Posted July 20, 2013 Author Report Posted July 20, 2013 I have still tried to figure this out... Due to the fact that the kanji seem not to fit any mei, and are not too skillfully chiselled, I have started to think it is not a mei at all but something else... My best guess so far is X田XXX厄浪 but does this make any kind of sense? Misfortune, waves? If there was a 人 in the end it would be interesting, but I see nothing... The second to last kanji does look a lot like 厄, however, but that would be quite an unusual inscription, wouldn't it? Any more good or bad ideas, anybody Veli Quote
Brian Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 Veli, You are going to have to upload more pics..maybe scans. Sometimes just a slight change in angle, light or technique will yield results. Brian Quote
Veli Posted July 20, 2013 Author Report Posted July 20, 2013 Yup, but unfortunately I do not have the yari at hand, its owner lives in Central Finland. Furthermore, with the yari in hand, there was not much more to see... almost a hopeless case but I think it could have been recognized if there would have been a clue leading to an oshigata to compare. But now I think it may not be a Mei at all, so probably it will remain a mystery. Anyway, here's a couple of more pics. BR, Veli Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted July 21, 2013 Report Posted July 21, 2013 Might the blade of the yari be shown ? Might help some of the connaisseurs on here. Personally am interested to see the blade itself and the tip and polish. Quote
