Yasurime appear to be directly above the center mekugi ana on both the omote and ura side of the nakago. The patina is also much darker there. Seems to me the very bottom mekugi ana would be the original. As far as the horimono placement I'm not familiar with why it would be covered under the habaki/tsuka.
Old steak knife. Most likely was a hidden tang handle(in ivory or bone etc) where did you get the saya? Could very well have just been used to secure the kozuka in the saya of a display.
Just some random steak knives.
A piece together was my thought as well. I was in contact with the seller on it. She knew nothing about it and had a friend disassemble it for her(it was stuck in the saya when she bought it)No previous auctions of any swords. I'm assuming he did the damage to the release button. I asked about the Habaki and she never knew if it was there to begin with.
The second mekugi ana drilled through the menuki threw me off as well as the replaced kashira. I did not bid on it.
Nakago looks broken and replaced(yari) and I am sure some of the mei is lost(name of smith perhaps). I think the last two Kanji are "Shu" and "Ju" can anyone make sense of the top?
Thank you.
RIA has been viewed as caveat emptor on their online auctions in the gun industry. Their premier auctions(high end/mueseum quality pieces) are a completely different story and come with a guarantee. So what does that tell you?
But like any auctions, I tend to avoid what the seller(s) write in the listing and view the items and judge for myself.
Did you go the correct way? Mekugi are tapered, and only removed one way. Sounds like you're tapping it out the wrong way. The holes in the Tsuka are also tapered(one side bigger diameter)
Looking for help on translation. Seller has mei translated differently in English(twice) and is saying item is Muromachi period, which I question. Trying to research the Smith but not pulling anything up with what I have tried. Included picture of NBTHK kicho. Which I believe haven't been issued for over 30 years?
Thank you.
