I have some images in imgur which I can't download for some reason, so sadly I just have to post the link instead, but it appears to be "He 300994" (All credits go to Bruce for kindly deciphering what the number looks like on an earlier post.) Photos: https://imgur.com/a/Bx8qkvt

I understand what you're getting at as quality control at the end of the war wasn't very good, and the overstamping of the numbers is just one factor of that. I don't think it's a fake, but the photos are confusing, I do plan on getting better photos and I apologize for the confusion. But thank you for telling me in the first place, I appreciate your honest thoughts on it! -Jace

I understand what you mean, but it is authentic. Its a late War Type 95 made by Jinsen Arsenal, my great grandfather picked it up during WW2. Of course the story alone doesn't guarantee it's authenticity, but over stamping was not unusual for these late War NCOs. If I may ask, why do you think it's fake?

As these are decently rare guntos, here's a study piece for your eyes! Its made by Jinsen Arsenal. (Sorry for the bad lighting, these are the only decent photos I have of now.) Story: My Great Grandfather picked this Gunto off a deceased Japanese Officer and took it home with him.

I'm mainly looking for stories, but photos are always a bonus! -Jace.

Do you have a collection of Nihonto? If so, what is your favorite and how did you come across it?

I understand the not wanting to take the handle off to expose the tang. If your brother in law is comfortable with maybe traveling to the San Francisco show going on. I'm pretty confident someone there can help you there if you want more in hand help. Sadly I don't know anything about the shows going on. But the blades appear to be civilian. Best of luck! -Jace.

The number 17 is on the gunto mountings I presume. This is normal And very common for guntos as they were usually numbered to know what parts go to what sword. The fittings are authentic to the blade, and not replacements. -Jace
-
Better photos would greatly help. One is in gunto fittings while the other is in civilian mountings. Better photos would definitely help to approximate age and authenticity, we also need to see the blades themselves. -Jace
-
This isn't a gunto. This appears to be much older than that. I can't translate the signature for you, others will tell you more. More photos would be appreciated!

I see that there's what I assume is a tachi in tachi-style mountings at the top of the NMB. I assume this is the logo. Are there any photos of this particular blade? Wondering out of curiosity! -Jace

I know many others have mixed emotions about using swords for kata and other sorts of training. I could be making myself a fool for not fully knowing what kata is. But if you are planning to use this sword for training. I would advise you use a modern reproduction as antique nihonto are unreplaceable. Again, I could be making myself for a fool.

This is a Chinese fake. Avoid this like the plague!

Identifying an old sword left to me

I would also advise putting a light coat of Choji oil or light mineral oil with a microfiber cloth to help protect it from further erosion. -Jace -

I'm sorry for your loss. I can't tell you much, but the sword could be gimei (false signature). I believe it may be gimei due to the flower overflowing off the nakago, or it may have been shortened at some point. Others will tell you more. Is there a signature on the other side? -
Could you perhaps add some photos of the writing on the nakago? - Jace R.

You'll need to take the handle off to expose the nakago for a better identification. Here's a video https://youtu.be/oFT5OMQr2vw -Jace R.

Can someone help identify this sword?

This is the only photo I have as of now, but I'll get more later today! But it has 2 rings instead of 1. -

Is there a way to preserve it or restore it? I haven't heard of it being worth it to get it restored. But how would you go to preserve it? -

Thank you for clarity it isn't Japanese! I thought it wasn't due to seeing others like this, but I'm not really sure with non-traditional swords. I think this is just another sword he owned and not the one he spoke of. If this is the sword he spoke of, then that's a whole story in itself! -Jace -

swords opinion request 4

That is by far the worst manhandled nakago I've ever seen, whether it's authentic I can't tell, but I would put my guess as an older sword that someone foolishly tried to clean. -Jace
