  1. Just picked this waki up recently. Its got a big beefy blade to it and some nice koshirae. I suspect it could be a cut down naganata or nagamaki. Either way I thought it looked really nice. Figured you guys would enjoy it as well.
  2. A double gold habaki with zigzag pattern on my newest wakizashi.
  3. I like the hamon on the left sword but prefer the sugata of the one on the right. If it came down to it I would pick the one on the right.
  4. I can vouch for Dawson's book on Grey's site. I bought the same book at the same place. He has it for the cheapest I've seen online. The book is 100% worth it and will save you money in the long run.
  5. Unfortunately the back strap is the only picture I am missing.
  6. Yeah that Habaki is really what caught my attention. What do you think about the blade? Its listed as a koto blade. It has a bohi that starts halfway on the nagako and ends halfway down the blade. It also appears to be without a Yokote.Would this indicate a cut down koto naganata or nagamaki?
  7. Just came across this one that caught my eye. Really don't know what to make of it. The brass on the handle looks too bright/new. However, the habaki and the blade look very promising. The handle wrapping doesn't look like ray skin but more like snake skin? It also has the locking mechanism at the front of the handle where the index finger would rest. The metal piece at the throat of the scabbard looks weird as well. Like I said, don't know what to think about this one. What do you all think?
  8. Very interesting. Especially the fact that they were selling Koto blades at these conventions. I always assumed Gunto mounted Koto blades were all family heirlooms the soldier himself brought from home.
  9. It's not a fake sword. It was produced for the Japanese military, but it is not an actual weapon. Like Bruce said it was primarily used during formal military occasions. These are typically not valuable and worth about $100-$200. Yours has a kamon (family crest) on the hilt making it slightly more interesting/valuable, but not by much.
  10. Thanks Bruce. I only have/ever had one type 98 and it has the band type. Did not realize this was more of an exception. Maybe it is a change they made in the manufacturing later into the war to save on materials. Having that extra brass at the opening of the scabbard does seem kind of unnecessary.
  11. Wow, really cool photos Dave! Maybe if I sell this LWG one day the next owner will be able to remove the tsuka and shed a little more light on this subject. I am really curious myself if there is anything significant underneath but not confident enough in my hands to do a clean job.
  12. The metal piece around the throat of the scabbard is also unique. On my standard type 98 the metal piece only goes around the outside of the throat of the scabbard. On the LWG the metal piece goes around the outside and over the top (excluding the hole for the blade.) Hope that makes sense. Thought it was important to point out.
  13. Yep that appears to be the one. Thank you very much.
  14. Anyone know what mon this is? Came on the back of a light weight gunto. I’ve tried taking a clearer picture but this is the best I have for now.
  15. I measured the blade and it appeared to be exactly 0.9 inches. I attempted to poke out the menuki but couldn’t get it to budge. One side of the menuki Ana is covered by the ito wrap. I was able to move it a little but the ito wrap is so tight and fragile I would rather not futz with it for now. ps. Any one know what clan the mon is?
  16. More pics. This one side by side with a standard type 19 dress saber. Also the LWG is slightly less heavy than a standard type 98. I’d guess maybe 1-3 lbs lighter.
  17. The blade appears to be The exact style as the type 19 dress swords. Acid etched Hamon and chrome plated. No edge on the place either. As for the fittings every thing seems to be the same as a typical type 98 except proportioned smaller. The only difference I noticed is the throat of the scabbard seems to be slightly different. I do not see any evidence there was a second hanger. I will attach photos I thought were relevant and let you decide.
  18. Received my LWG quicker than expected. It had a clan mon on it I’m hoping someone can identify for me. Picture below.
  19. Late 30s early 40s I think. I think someone else could probably give you a more accurate answer.
  20. Yeah looks legit but not great condition. Here is mine that is identical to your pretty much.
  21. Ah I see. I wish it was his as neils was a lot nicer. Yeah I had a feeling I found a rare one when I saw it listed. Not sure if I’ll keep it or trade it for something else yet. Not even sure what the value is because I think I got it for a pretty good price.
  22. Haha wow what are the odds. I’ll take good care of it for you.
  23. Wow that one looks a lot nicer than mine. I also noticed mine is missing the suspension ring. Like I said, the sword is not in hand yet. Once I get it I might take it Apart and do an update.
  24. Some of the other examples in Dawson's book (like on pg. 156) are also missing the habaki. The type 19 dress swords are also without habaki I think, so it makes sense that this would also not have one, right? My main concern was that someone took a type 19 dress sword blade and put it in a type 98 mountings. But the proportions look small/correct and the ito wrap looks professional enough I suppose.
