Thank you! If this is legit mei it must be one of the smith's last works as he died in 1852.

Curious what this mei reads on this wakizashi. I was able to make out that is dated a lucky day in august 1850 (I think) but can’t make out the rest. These are the best photos I have. thanks

A Pair of WW2 Japanese Type 95 NCO Swords for Comment
ribendao replied to drac2k's topic in Military Swords of Japan
The ones selling for more than $900 are the real ones. Both of yours are more desirable versions of type 95s (early brass tsuba type and side latch type.) Also yours seem to be in good condition with little rust and much of the original paint still on the handle. All things that drive the price up in a collector's eyes. Just my 2 cents. -

Just go to Ebay and do an advanced search for sold type 95 swords. You will see what the current market value is. Members of this forum are a little hesitant to give values. I will tell you that $650 is much below the current market value. -
Yay lucky me! A bargain indeed. Just sent payment to Brian.

Identification of a WW2 sword assistance please
ribendao replied to Jim W's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Yes, but unfortunately I am not seeing any distinguishing features. Typically the naval ones will have an engraving of an anchor and the police ones will have the department's badge/crest. I used to have one like yours, without any markings on the back strap. Im not sure to whom they were issued. -

Could be a naval prison sword or a police patrol man's sword also. A picture of the backstrap of the handle would be helpful. -
This is now sold. Please help me move it to the Sold section.

Hi Bruce, The other seppa seem standard for a kai. The piece pictured above appears to be made of copper. The other seppa all match up and have holes for a working retention strap/clip. The saya is ray skin covered. The blade appears to be mumei with only the numbers 九六 painted on. Blade has legit hamon but I think the blade is oil quenched or something. I don't see any stamps but noticed a suspect spot were one may have been at one time. The sword also came with a surender tag as well

Hello, Recently picked up my first kai gunto. Upon disassembly I discovered unusual markings underneath the dai-seppa. Have not seen anything that matches it online before. Is it possibly an older tsuba reworked for this kai? Has anyone every seen something like this before? Thanks

I'll bid $50.

I have little knowledge of the Japanese language. However, after putting 源贞道 in Google Translate I got Minamoto no Sadado. Not sure how accurate that is.

For the second character I'm seeing 贞 not 完.

Do not clean a sword in polish with uchiko. I made that mistake with my first nihonto. -
Thanks! Never been so relieved to have a scratch on my nihonto.

Very cool! Just goes to show never dismiss an item too quickly. I found the below eBay listing that has a tsuba that looks to be If the same style. https://www.ebay.com/itm/325190176831?hash=item4bb6d8503f:g:oa8AAOSw3yNigKKo

Hi, the tsuba does not seem to fit the nakago well. The blade is too small. I am including some edge shots I took. Unfortunately some of the green patina returned after it dried.

It does look like the last one pictured. I’ll try your method but I don’t know what I would be looking for. In the meantime. Please enjoy pictures of the menuki I forgot to include.

Hi Geraint, I will see if I can get some more photos soon. The tsuba feels like cheap cast brass. The habaki seems nice though. Two piece with what looks to be a "moon and clouds" motif.

Thanks Jean Can anyone confirm what the rolled up paper is for? Am I right in my assumption that it is just scrap paper used to fill out the empty spaces under the ito wrap?

Thanks Jean Raden is the word I was looking for. Found many more examples now. I had a feeling this was a tourist/export piece. It came with a mumei wakizashi that looks shinshinto. Looks half decent if it wasn't for the rust...
