  1. Havent gotten it yet. It may be iron, seller wasnt sure.
  2. I dont mean to pressure you or anything but I really think this sword is exactly what you are looking for. Its antique, made in Japan, and was originally made for iado practice in the first place. http://www.ebay.com/itm/322490797869
  3. Ordered this today for a bargain price. Any insight yall can give me on it? I think its shakudo, though im no expert on tosogu.
  4. Bump. Sale fell through i guess. guy never resopnded back to me.
  5. I wont comment on specific sellers but yeah a wak in good polish will average about 2k, katana about 3. I was of the understanding you meant 1k or less.
  6. So start with a coat of tung and then apply subsequent coats of red until opaque and then black to the same criteria?
  7. "You can get real nihonto as cheap as a grand on Ebay... something that will never be papered or lusted after." Eh.. Im not trying to be a douche or anything, but if you see a real nihonto on ebay for sub 1k its either A: a rusty shelalie. B: not nihonto.
  8. This needs real world testing. Anyone up to donating a SJS blade to get shot at?
  9. take a small hammer and a chopstick and tap them out. two of them is a bit rare for a tsuka, I'm tending to concur with shogun that its Chinese. the hamon that I can see from the previous pictures looks etched, but it could just be the camera. Hamon is very difficult to capture properly with a camera.
  10. Would it help to get a smooth finish by first finishing the surface with a coat of tung oil?
  11. I know very little too, so Ill try to chime in with what I see.. Does it go through to the other side? It may not be a crack but a poor folding weld, which is not a serious problem. If it goes through to the other side or penetrates into the hardened edge, its a definite value killer. This implies to me, along with the shape of the base of the tang, that the blade has been remounted at least once, and possibly shortened from a longer katana/wak. Cannot tell without seeing the hamon at the neck of the tang though. Probably not. The tsuba is required to be in place on a sword to ensure everything fits together tightly, like a puzzle kind of. The tsuba was probably removed at some point for storage or who knows, and the leather 'washers' were probably made and put on just to keep everything in place with it off.
  12. I believe the design on #2 to actually be a stylized well, commonly found on Mon, eg. Sumitomo group.
  13. DONT. You WILL irreversably damage a piece of art and history. Get a PC sword for that. Also look at it from a monetary perspective, you will damage and significantly reduce the value of a 3k dollar investment.
  14. Brian, I run a webserver on a business line, I might be able to help you out with some of the hosting duties if you need it.
  15. Forgot to mention in the original post, I'm asking 4000, (That's the "I don't wanna sell it" price), OBO. If you would like additional pics btw feel free to ask.
