How closely do the mounts and blades have to be to be considered a "daisho" . Do the tsuba, fuchi and kashira all have to match or be a similar theme or same smith? Same saya, color shape, etc, I am assuming as a matching pair this would be the case but >??
I guess two that are close could be displayed as this - but are not true daisho
You are lucky to have met people who have had this effect on you and how you think and express yourself - they obviously have given you a good perspective on life.
I agree - even the seppa are mismatched in that the one with the rectangular opneing is from a gunto - its for the latching mechanism. Its almost as if he put all the parts together from stuff lying on his workbench and then put it up for sale.
This certainly has gotten stranger and stranger, but from all said and seen , still agree should sell it ASAP, and send the old guy on a nice trip !
I would like to see the blade as I can't access the photo page. My date books are not here so I can't give you the exact date but I will guess 1941. I would be very surprised if it was worth $10,000.00 but ?
Well then - as with the term "good enough" it probably isn't - or Close enough isn't (close at all )!
Am I to understand with this school specifically it has to be very very close to identical to be acceptable, at least closer than many others, or in some cases individual smiths?
I know I rarely sign the same way or even print the same but I guess considering the technique for cutting the mei there would be more attention to the details.
Always interesting and educational - thanks
OK, I'll try to learn something - the yasurime are not as even or deep and at a slightly steeper angle on the blade in question, as to the tagane makura, I can;t tell whether considering the pictures and the angulation there is a big difference but would really like to read what you think?
Hi back John : Well agree with what you said, the experts should help, but at least the strokes seem in the right direction and within both mei seem to be the same weight etc, but - I can't tell well enough to be sure - that said I still wouldnt use it for practice! :?
Going along this sad and pathetic thread I stumbled over this statement. Can you specify?
reinhard
I meant I rarely care what people I don't personally know think as often most people can't (think ), and opinions are like a#*@ holes - everyone has one or can be one.
Me too - They are in my den with some pics of the guys in various other pursuits - fishing golf etc as well as my pool table and some other stuff . I like to be able to pick one up when I feel like it and not have to remember a combination.
Different part of the world I know and I probably should lock them up but - heres some as they sit @
Stephen: A man has to do what a wife wants him to or words to that effect. For Gods sake don't make any decisions on participation in this board based on what anyone you dont know, never met, don't understand or respect for their reputation has said or intimated. The rest can go to hell so take it for what it is and carry on. I rarely care what people think - most can't.
You on the other hand have established your rep here - carry on, all the best in the new year and understand that we all learn from your posts and opinions even though it may not be specific to one of us!

Well we shouldn't mind knowing one CAN do it - one just shouldnt. I can remember God forbid, dropping a katana and the hardest thing was NOT trying to catch it before it hit the floor.
So always remember one can -- but should never forget how sharp these works of art really are!
Well - I hoped as much but tended based on the oshigata I had access to that it was gimei - one never knows till they sign the shinsa papers does one. That said I am pleased, as I said, it is nearly 3 feet long and motohaba is 27 mm and the blade is 7mm thick so it is quite beefy.
Thanks Grey - I had one of them, but not the others -- but now it seems to look a lot like
HMMM Wish I could put them side by side - same coloration -- close as I can get -- mines on the right --
now thoughts - maybe its not gimei???????
I have this naginata that is signed " Higo Donatuki Matahachi" Nagasa is 46.3 cm, nakago is a long 47.1 cm and it "looks" right age. I "have some other oshigata - some are close - others not - and it is high on the nakago so ? Opinions accepted with thanks
I'd say we hijacked it pretty well, but to be honest, when I said i like mumei, or don't worry about gimei, I usually find that I look at the blade, buy it if I like it, and then worry about the signature.
