Last time i bring this up. Not wanting to sound nitpicky, but (dare i say it) the Ara-nie, would anyone agree that for this school it looks unintentional?. Im not saying you wont find it on these blades, just saying it comes across as a forging error, to me any way. This for me made it a lot more difficult, looking at blades such as Satsuma.
  3. Really well put that Bob! Afher that Kantei experience, couldn't agree more Seriously though, some wonderful blades from the Edo period, Ubu and signed
  4. Point being, 4 different people_4 different answers. Ask them their opinion on smiths and again you will get a varied response. This is why i think it would be interesting to see other rankings/info from different experts. Especially in this day and age,
  5. Yes, 4 people with different attributions.

Now on to a Sukezane/Suketsuna combo Thats me done on this for today, tough one. A Kanenaga too at one point.
  8. Aye, its widely accepted.
  9. Ok, so just bias in the Wazamono rankings, i take it
  10. Briefly, Jacques, im pretty sure every collector has a lot of respect for the NBTHK etc etc. Their opinions can vary, just check out the blade in the kantei with 4 attributions! Rankings, do you not think there is bias?. Personally, would be great to see something new, other expert opinions and preferences I would find this interesting. See what remains the same and what would change Kind of feels stagnant at times, this hobby
  11. Ubu Nakago is of great help when you want to work out what school made your sword.
  12. I thought the whole point of "art" was to be able to look at it and understand it and appreciate it for oneself, without influence. Some folk live within the confines of books and outdated opinions and expect others to follow suit. In that respect, they become narrow minded and cheat themselves. These people never think outside the boundaries and never progress to teach others anything new. Same old ,,,,,,,, Boring really, Thank God some folk seek out new ideas.

Hi, yes following the hamon near the habuchi, just i could not find examples where it is high up towards the Shinogi-ji, as in the kantei sword. Live and learn.
  14. Dunno why im reminded of this movie.

Agree about Yamato Shizu That Ara-Nie though in the jigane, could not find any other sword by Yamato Shizu to match it.
  16. And there you go again over complicating things haha Agree about photos though.
  17. Il be honest Jacques, surprised you said "Jo" Ps, ruling Chu-Jo out can really make you miss out on some great smiths. Just one example. May not be your taste, but did some great swords, https://www.aoijapan.com/tanto-bishu-osafune-ju-yokoyama-saemon-sukekane/
  18. Remember it now, cheers. Just concentrating on the blade, dont look Shinshinto to me. Less important, neither does the kasane. But what do i know
  19. Jacques, if you always came across like you did in your last few posts then you probably wouldn't wind people up as much. Yes, always have to be sceptical in this hobby. One thing that always surprises me about this hobby are the swords that dont quite fit. I dont want to spend all afternoon pulling out examples of swords of different lengths from a certain period with large O-kissaki. If i did though wouldn't be surprised if i could find a papered example the same size as the sword we talk about. Im more interested in finding more out about the blade itself haha Cheers.
  20. I get what your saying, its just that suriage was not always done the proper way. When i look at the image of the full blade the impression i get is that it is too straight, so may well be O suriage John has had it in hand so thats good enough for me. Anyways, does it matter
  21. Im confused Jacques, with what you say, its as though there was one workshop in Japan that did suriage and always did it the same. The reality is it could have been done any old way. Nakago dont look too old so maybe suriage done quite late in its life.
  22. Remember reading this some time ago, about British contracts with Liege https://collegehillarsenal.com/Fine-Belgian-Made-P1853-Enfield-by-OP-Drissen-of-Liège

Not a guess but this has led me to such places as Hankei and Mizuta Bit of a wild goose chase so far The Ara-nie in the jigane is the issue, for me.
  24. Thats great Thomas, the wonders of the modern age. Might just take you up on the offer. Cheers.
