  1. Darcy has written about the Hosho masame controversy. Ineteresting and worth reading: http://www.nihonto.ca/hosho-sadakiyo/
  2. Ware in sue-Koto should not be surprising. This is nothing fatal.
  3. Of course none of us here has held the sword in hand, but I can't help but wonder if another shinsa wouldn't attribute this one to Shikkake, because of the masame being prominent closer to the ha. In the pictures it seems that closer to the shinogi ji we have a different hada, not masame. But this is all purely theoretical a we try to judge this sword looking at photographs. Still, it seems a very good sword, by all means..
  4. Jeff, it is a gift, maybe with a few minor flaws, but still it is a serviceable wakizashi in polish. I'd love to receive gifts like this Hard to say what it is from your pics, but I'd say it could be sue-Koto.
  5. EMS will not ship swords to certain countries now. Poland is on the list, France is not. C'est la vie, I presume.
  6. C'mon Brian And who has invented those neat boxes with those fancy names? Tachi kanagushi, tachishi (yes, that is not the same), ko-kinko, kagamishi, tosho, katchushi, yup, even Kanayama :-)

    My Tsuba

Older tosho tend to be thinner. I would say this is a later Edo, tosho-style tsuba.

    My Tsuba

Matt, thickness at rim or seppa dai?
  9. Curtis, Your pics of the blade are highly compressed jpegs and pixelated. I'd love to see the hada and hamon but in these pics they are not visible. I still think/feel it is a shinto/shinshinto. Better pics would give us more food for discussion
  10. Iron lloks good, but you have removed patina from the bras and copper inlay
  11. Gents, I presume you write the Newsletter on a word processor. What is the problem with saving it as a PDF? Joined the JSSUS this year, BTW :-) Gonna renew for 2015 this month
  12. It did, but: - the market is big and diverse enough for all of us - not everybody is chasing the same things (same as above) - more collectors means more liquidity and facilitates selling - newcomers create demand for lower end items (not to be confused with crap) that more advanced collectors sell to move up Shall I go on?

    Koto tachi

That was an idiotic remark on my part, apologies :-) As Martin has rightly (if ironically) pointed out, machi okuri is part of o-suriage. I have adjusted my post, accordingly. Thanks, Martin Again, my suspicion that this sword is saiha, is pure speculation, based on the colour of the nakago (or the sabi giwa, to be precise). I'd love to see the hamon - it looks dull in the pictures... Then again - the red colour below the machi - this could be just some rusting under the habaki...

    Koto tachi

I think this sword may well be saiha. The nakago looks deteriorated, the sabi-giwa area looks artificial. Also, the curvature is a bit strange. I sincerely hope that I am wrong.
  15. Anonymous, Here is something to aspire to (and a Higo dragon, too): http://www.tetsugendo.com/kodogu/T-124_ ... aiRyu.html
  16. Thank you Chris I have seen "shugo" in Google translate, good to know they got it right :-D
  17. This one was fun, an inscription on a shinsaku mamorigatana which has a classic ken sugata: 守 護 剣 也 Which to me, a bloody amateur, translates as: Protective ken (this is) But I have doubts about the two kanji: 守 and 護 They seem to mean the same... "mamori" Could you please guide me a little bit? Pic of the original kanji attached. Thanks for your help
  18. Chris, don't be grumpy and remember how we all started While the tsuba is not a masterwork, it is real, and not China junk or Japanese crap, just a tsuba. And it was cheap, too. For $20-30? I call this an excellent buy for a beginner. Neither you nor me would buy it but that does not make it junk Don't get discouraged, ...... Anonymous? (Sign your posts according to rules, please). We have a fair share of grumpy old men here
  19. That was an excellent start
  20. It is a good tsuba. No more pics needed, it won't turn out to be a National Treasure :-) But it is real, the carving is nice, the style is Higo.
  21. Where?
  22. Chris, I understand, thanks
  23. Why, don't you want others to share their experience and their opinion of your work? That would be highly unusual... Don't get me wrong, I don't question your credentials, but, working in the service industry means you have to stand for what you are doing. Not a good start...
  24. Later work, could be Kumagai or Tsuboi as well, or simply a Higo-style tsuba. Whatever, very nice find, especially give the amount of trash on eBay. Well done
