Stephen Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 now that the auction is over I was wondering what other board members take is on this polish, it sure looks like it had a acid wash to make the hada stand out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0107811873 Quote
dkirkpatrick Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 I see what you mean Stephen but my impression is that it is just o-hada forging that stands hadatachi with liberal nugui. Does look a little strong from the pics though I agree. Doug Quote
mike yeon Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 I've seen a few shinshinto/meiji era pieces that exhibit that contrasting hada that looks like big strands of chikei (but flow along the grain). I believe it's caused by mixing hard/soft steels during the forging (like cheating to create chikei). From what little I know it was a method started during shinshinto times. Havn't found much else. mike Quote
bdgrange Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 I agree that the hada has been enhanced perhaps as with "Tanpan" method of polishing. This is where a mild mix of acid is applied to the steel after it has had boiling water applied. This is brushed on and left briefly before being washed off. I believe. This is a technique that has been used for a long time and produces beautifull results when done correctly. Normally it would only be found with blades expected to be used in some form of Iaido, or so I have read. Bill Delagrange Quote
