Greetings all,

I recently purchsed this "ear of corn" tobacco clasp for a very reasonable price...the metal-work seems very detailed and heavy (shakudo?) but the reveres tells me it was either well-kept of is Gendai. Any thoughts are appreciated. Regardless, for the small price paid, I like it :) . Thanks in advance,

Curtis R.

Ah, I wanted to bid on that too. But I was so damn tired (it ended in the middle of the night here in Germany).

From the pictures, I alwas thought it was made from iron/steel... Did you check with a magnet?

Learning to identify cast from hand made work is essential in collecting tosogu.

Hi Franco,

I agree a very good point. In regard to the original work that is the topic of the tread I would say it is modern reproduction.

Yep, it's magnetic Tobias - and I sort of figured it was cast, but nicely. No patina on the back like the other old pieces I have....but I still like it and the price was in my budget :) .

Pete,

A loooong time ago, Guido posted an animated picture of a chimpanzee smacking himself on the forehead with a "DOH!" look on it's face.

I'm a bit pressed for time. Would you mind searching for it, and posting it to yourself as a reply to your comment?

So, umm, David -- does that make it a 're-tread'?

Hi Pete,

Got to love the autocorrect spelling on my Iphone while riding on a Washington metro. :rotfl:

Yours tunely,

David Tiles
