I have this tanto but do not know what the mei says

thanks in advance

...

I have added some more pics, undortunately the server does not allow high resolution ones, so if you realy believe it could be a fine example I can send you high resolution ones to your email adress or so. The blade is in old polish with minot nail catchers, scratches, but othersie a good forge, and flawless. There is 2 dragon horimono on both sides, I believe they are old and original to the blade, the steel on the engraved part is thicker than the rest of the blade, even comes out a little thicker than the mune and the shinogi line probably was made like this to give a thicker outer layer for the horimono. (just an amateur guess of mine)

regards

peter

Hi Peter,

Looks like you have a wakizashi, not a tanto. If the horimono stands proud of the surrounding blade it is most likely because past polishers have left the dragon untouched and polished only the blade around it. When the wakizashi was made the dragon would have been flush with the surrounding steel.

That would be very unusual - personally I've never seen a blade like that. It also would need a special Saya with a cout-out for the protruding Horimono ...

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or does the dragon on omote have 3 front legs? :freak: Horimono looks kind of amaturish to me... chippy and unfinished looking.

I've never heard of polishing around a horimono either. Would be nearly impossible.

(1) and (2) are front legs, and (3) is one of hind legs.

#3 was probably suppose to be the back foot but look again. It appears to have 2 front arms coming out of the same spot. It looks to me like the engraver made a mistake.

Am I the only one who sees this?

Adam, you are mistaking the belly of the dragon for the upper leg of no.3. Actually this leg is hidden behind the torso.

The arrangement of legs is correct! :)

If thats the belly then why are the flames going over what would be the shoulder just like on the back leg and just like it normally would. As I said, to me it looks like the engraver made a mistake and then tried to cover it up.
