orange Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Hi, I stumbled onto this board and like to learn about Nihonto. I'd like to ask expert's opinions on the attached katana; It is supposed to be by Ikkanshi Tadatsuna...but can't tell it's fake or authentic as a newbie to this world. I am considering to purchase it. Thanks in advance. Best, Karl Quote
cabowen Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Have you checked any sources for characteristics of Ikkanshi Tadatsuna? Have you compared the signature to any references? Why don't you do some research and then come back with specific questions. You will learn a great deal more that way... Quote
leo Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Hi, Karl! Chris is right! About a great smith as this specific Tadatsuna you will find enough info on the web to do some initial research, the results of which you can then discuss here. This spares the members the feeling just being used as an inexpensive information bureau! Does the blade have papers by NBTHK or NTHK? I assume it does not. The likelihood of it being a gimei signature then is very high! Best Regards, Quote

I did do initial research and read some posts on Tadatsuna knives...and I found a couple of inconsistency with the first and last Kanji on the knife. I just want to confirm my suspicion with an expert's opinion. I was told that NBTHK paper would cost $1000 to $1500 more...another source of suspicion. Best, Karl Quote
Mark Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 i think this is a Showa era gendai with a "big name" Quote
pcfarrar Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 i think this is a Showa era gendai with a "big name" Thats exactly what I thought when I saw it. The lack of a clear nioiguchi makes me suspect that it could be oil tempered. Quote
orange Posted August 19, 2011 Author Report Posted August 19, 2011 Great!! Thanks a lot guys!! You just saved me a few thousands. Best, Karl Quote
