dbn Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 This is a wooden gunbai I purchased at a yard sale. I have attached, or tried to attach, front and back images. I would like to know the meaning of the characters, as well as the symbolism of the sun and moon. Intial research tells me that this is used in sumo wrestling by the referee, but I am interested in more details, to help me appreciate more fully the history and meaning of this beautiful piece. Thank you! Quote

dbn Posted July 30, 2011 Author Report Posted July 30, 2011 Apologies -- clearly I did not understand this part of the protocol. Daphne (formerly dbn) Quote
k morita Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 Hi, #1 pic: "Peace reigns over the land." 天下泰平 #2 pic: " A comfortable, cool wind blows to everyone equally." 一味清風 This short sentence shows umpire's(umpire of Sumo wrestling) fairness. Quote
dbn Posted August 1, 2011 Author Report Posted August 1, 2011 Dear Morita, Thank you very much for the translation of the characters on the gunbai. If you have any other information or thoughts about this piece I would be very interested -- age, origin, symbolism, and so on. I'm very grateful! Daphne Quote
Toryu2020 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Daphne- FWIW not sword related, not terribly old it appears. As Morita San has pointed out this is a Sumo-gyoji's fan or at least a model of one... -t Quote
