Birdman Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Is there a definitive way to tell whether a particular shoto is a "boy's sword" rather than a small wakizashi or a large tanto? I have heard of boy's swords, but have never seen photos of them, and no way to compare them to other shoto. Quote
Brian Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Rich, Search the forum for "Boy's" or "Boys" and you should find lots of info. Identifying them sometimes comes from gut feel, and other times from recognition that the shape and style looks unnatural for the size of the blade. A small, thin shinogi-zukuri sword that is around 30cm nagasa would obviously make you think further. There are pics in threads here. Brian Quote
Thierry BERNARD Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 here one of mine : nagasa : 34 cm Quote
Birdman Posted April 8, 2011 Author Report Posted April 8, 2011 Nice blade! So a lot of it is proportion, then? If you hadn't told me the nagasa length, I would have taken it for a larger blade. Maybe not a katana, but a larger wakizashi. Interesting! Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Rich, you can see some shots of one down this page here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2554&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=1335 It has been away for a polish and I should be getting it back this evening. Quote
