I've been looking at purchasing a Hizen katana either from the Tadahiro or Masahiro lines, and notice that I don't ever see any date inscriptions on the nakago.

Is there a reason for this, or has anyone seen dated swords from these Hizen smiths?

Dated swords do exist.  I have read that a date on a Hizen sword is associated with an 'event' in the swordsmith's life.

Hi! This is the first time I realized that dated Tadayoshi and Tadahiro are quite rare! At least on the market, because I do recall pages of dated Hizen in the Hizento Daikan.

This is weird, all three dated Tadahiro I can find in a jiffy are before Tadahiro's Juryo (for Ominodaijo) in Kanei 18.

It does look like Tadahiro dated his swords more before and around his Juryo.

Ah, thanks everyone for sharing all the data on dated Hizen swords, and it seems that they aren't too rare at all.

I would still say they are considered special and a bit rare, considering the vast amount of Hizen swords produced.

I have one from Shodai Tadayoshi with mizukage (yakidashi-utsuri) and an interesting hamon incorporating gunome, chōji, pointed peaks (togariba), “crab-claw” formations (kani-no-tsume), and tobiyaki... signed "Hizen-koku-ju Musashi-daijo Fujiwara TADAHIRO, Auspicious day in the 8th month Kanei 3rd". (1626)

There goes that standout workmanship, the hallmark of the early Hizen tradition... I see blades like this and its a reminder of how I could so easily fall into collecting only hizento. The presence here is balanced and ultra-commanding... A beautiful wakizashi to say the least.
