I recently received this shinchu (brass) tsuba, I was attracted to its design of Wood Sorrel. It looks to have been mounted with the tagane around the nakago ana and seppa shadow and has what I think are traces of lacquer on the surface and mimi. I'm not sure if the hitsu ana is original and may have been added later.

At some point in its life someone looks to have practised nunome zogan preparation? Dimensions below:

Height 74.4mm

Width 70.1mm

Mimi thickness 3.6mm

Seppa dai thickness 3.75mm

Nakago ana 27.3mm x 7.9mm

To me it looks to fit Tachi Kanagushi but would welcome the views of the Board.

Many thanks

I believe it's possible that that pattern may actually be plum flower - you can see the stamens in the middle.  At least that Is the description that was given in a recent catalogue, and it makes sense.

It does not fit Tachi Kanagu-shi, as it is not a Tachi style Tsuba and it likely would have been mounted on an Uchigatana. It might just scrape in for Ko-kinko, but I would place it in the early Edo period.

Actually most of tsuba appraised as tachi-kanagushi by NBTHK don't show a tachi style orientation. So, why not, tachi-kanagushi or simply ko-kinkō...
Regarding the sukashi it's quite surely sorrel (酢漿 - katabami).

Thanks all for the correction on the plum flower / sorrel question.  I took the information in the catalogue I had as meaning that there was a traditional representation of plum which differentiated it from cherry, but clearly that's not the case (and the catalogue from the recent Hayes Collection sale by Czerny's had it wrong).

Thanks Justin!

Again I learned something new today! While plum-tree/apricot is represented by the blossoms, KATABAMI is so by the leaves!

I apologize for any confusion or misinformation!

Sadly It is quite common for NBTHK Tachi Kanagu-shi attributions to be aribtrary and incorrect, often based more on a vibe or feeling than any clear evidence that it was created for a Tachi.

All, thanks for the replies.

Robert/Justin, I should have looked in my garden as the sorrel does indeed have 5 petal flowers!

Further research on tachi kanagushi needed.
