G Bryant Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 I cannot find anywhere accept one little picture of the crest on my tsuba , I'm very new to the history, but after days of researching I believe it to be the Tokugawa family crest , on a very early tsuba possibly pre Edo or early as it has no decorations, heavy iron with just one cut out crest . that all my research indicates a tripple Hollyhock. there are no pictures anywhere of one similar , but the description matches , ( three heart shaped leaves in a circle with the point of each meeting in the exact center ) it has been neglected for a long period so corrosion and rust has taken some of the fine details away . please let me know any thoughts thank you Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 My impression is that this is a katabami kamon (not the aoimon of the Tokugawa shogunate). https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Katabami_inverted.jpg 1 Quote
Steve Waszak Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 Ray is correct. This is a katabami (one of the Oxalis variations, or Wood Sorrel) motif. The katabami has strong associations with good fortune and prosperity, as well as with resilience and endurance. Easy to see why this would be a desirable motif on tsuba. 1 Quote

Steve Waszak Posted June 25 Report Posted June 25 I would be curious to know if there is a mei on this guard. Aspects of it remind me of the work of the Nidai Yamakichibei. Quote
