Ted Tenold Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi all, There was discussion regarding Namban fittings a while back here. I had posted images of these menuki in that thread. Last night I learned that they had been listed on ebay and thought some folks here might like to know. The opening bid for a full set like this isn't bad in my opinion, and when you consider the rarity of namban style menuki, it seems even more so. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-ANTIQUE-EDO-PE ... 4aa01e5792 Have a look. b.hennick Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi Ted: I note that the vendor has zero feedback. Do you know him/her? I hardly ever bid on items from a brand new vendor... Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi Barry, Actually, it's Mike Christianson. He just recently opened the account and will be auctioning off bits and bobs. Quote
Stephen Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Barry knows but for those who don't Mike is one of the good guys, its good to have a contact now even if its Ebay. Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 Thanks for clarifying that Stephen. Yeah, not many alternatives to ebay unfortunately. But I'm working on something. Quote
b.hennick Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Hi Ted et al: I have never sold on ebay. Something about it bothers me. I am not sure just what. I have bought a number of things over the years. Some were disasters others fine. I think that after over 30 years at this I would make not make mistakes. I have! I learned to never deal with certain vendors and that others are great. I am excited to learn about any alternative to ebay that you come up with. I have certainly bought items on the messageboard but not sold here as yet. Perhaps it is time to start... No I think that I will wait to hear what Ted has up his sleeve. Finally yes Mike is one of the good guys. I would have no problem buying from Mike as I have over the years. I still think about that Shikkake tanto I let slip through my fingers..... Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 14, 2010 Author Report Posted April 14, 2010 No I think that I will wait to hear what Ted has up his sleeve. Might be a bit of a wait if it works at all. It's in the infant stages of planning and I don't want to build up hopes too much. Hopefully my plan works, but it still needs some time in the cellar. I would have no problem buying from Mike as I have over the years. I still think about that Shikkake tanto I let slip through my fingers..... I hope you cleaned the blade before going to get stitches. Yes, if it's the same one I remember, I too lusted for it. Alas, it was not to be. Better to have loved and lost.... Quote
Toryu2020 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Did anybody mention these are killer!? -t Quote
bridgeofdreams Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Namban are not usually my cup of tea, but they are interesting. As Tom says, these are killer, and for sure a set like this is something I've never seen. Quote
Stephen Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 maybe Mike got a offer he could not refuse, auctions over. Quote
b.hennick Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Hi: I was the high bidder but I did not reach reserve. I have emailed Mike and will talk to him in Chicago about them. I was the only bidder! I found that the most surprizing thing. I expected a lot of interest since these were discussed on this forum. Quote
machinist Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 I think he would have gotten no bids if members had not vouched for him, the combination of no feedback, pics that in some cases look like they came from a book, and a description that bounced between proper Japanese and common English terms for the parts probably made folks nervous. Stephen Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 agree Mike is getting hes Ebay legs, he'll work it out Quote
