Hi again to you who have time to answer:

when you see a wakizashi, like this one attached, that is 53cm Nagasa and a nakago as seen, can you assume only machi okuri, or maybe suriage. If the later, could it have been a short katana? Just wondering on thoughts about these long waki.

 Regards and thanks

Thank you. I’m not sure how to know that information. You are saying it could not be a wak at all? Interesting for sure

To be sure about that we should see very good photos of the BÔSHI, if possible in magnification. Dark background, dark room, using spotlights, sworg oriented tip-upwards.

This a pic I posted a while back on a different thread. It does show the hamon and somewhat the boshi. I rotated the picture to show better, I believe.

It is difficult to see the details in pictures. To me it would seem like it is hira-zukuri (flat sides with no ridgeline) in form? That would make me think it would be original size hira-zukuri wakizashi. Hira-zukuri geometry is pretty rare in naginata and katana, there are few examples but they are more common in wakizashi length. Some of the longer ones are 50 to 60 cm in length.
