Any thoughts on this tanto? A friends father got it in 1944 during the war. I thought it might be a post war/occupation souvenir piece, but he said his father never went to Japan. My other thoughts was a cut down blade from a repurposed Waki or katana. Any thoughts?

At best, it is a fragment of a larger blade. At worst, a post-war souvenir piece. Either way, it has sentimental value with your family!

I am leaning towards it being a souvenir piece. But if there's metal particle activity, then it might be a blade fragment.

Looks like someone filed in a secondary bevel on the edge, which is not typical of Japanese blades. I think Chris is correct about it being a souvenir piece.

My eyes arent the greatest, but I dont see anything there that says made in Japan. Looks simply like someone with some basic skills decided to try their hand at making a knife with hamon from modern steel....and succeeded
