Mikaveli Posted December 16, 2025 Report Posted December 16, 2025 Just wanted to share my latest purchase. This is another Tanba no Kami Terukado blade. I bought this one at auction, and had it sent to shinsha - slightly worried as the mei had some corrosion, so I was only 80% confident. Anyways, it passed Tokubetsu Hozon, and I'd say the hamon is actually finer than some of the long sword examples I have. So very happy. Looking for a good ko-wakizashi or tanto next. 💪 11 1 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted December 17, 2025 Report Posted December 17, 2025 Congratulations, that seems like a nice addition to the collection. 1 Quote

It's quite fun trying to chase good examples that capture the length and breadth of a smiths career... ...and not finding such examples often makes it more affordable. 🙂 1 Quote
Bazza Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 Thanks Michael, delighted to see this. Gives me a chance to show my latest find, a TERUKADO wakizashi (50.0 cm) in Edo period koshirae. It is said he signed TERUKANE in the earlier part of his career and TERUKADO after he was given TAMBA no KAMI in 1659, dying in 1584 (?). A google search finds much more information including on this Board. Regards, BaZZa. aka Barry Thomas. 1 1 Quote

As far as I know, Terukane is a different smith, who originally apprenticed with Terukado, but originally signing Kanesada (until later giving the name back to his teacher's biological son). To confuse you further, Terukado originally signed as Kanekado (兼門). He changed fairly early in his career (before the Tanba no Kami title, as he was signing with that name with earlier titles). Bazza Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 Michael, spot on mate. Shows the failure of shooting from the hip and relying on memory. Thanks for the correction. BaZZa. Quote
Jake6500 Posted January 4 Report Posted January 4 That is a beautiful naginata... (I would like to get something like that for my own collection in the future!) Does it have koshirae or is this one blade only? If so, are you considering getting koshirae made? Expensive, I know... But I would say worth it Quote

I think shipping can be complicated if too long. 🙈 So far as collecting goes, I'd highly recommend adding one to your collection. From my experience, they're far cheaper than a long sword by the same smith. Quote

That said, if you're having modern koshirae made I believe they can be made divisible/separable to get around this problem. My next blade acquisition is either going to be a shinto katana (currently only have a shin-shinto blade) or a naginata of some kind. If the opportunity comes around, a shin-shinto naginata would be the best of both worlds. I am mainly a fittings collector but am slowly expanding my collection and my interests. 1 Quote
