Kramer Posted November 29 Report Posted November 29 Hi - My dad has had this sword since he was a kid. In the 1950s they were stationed in Japan and my grandmother bought it for him from an antique shop in the 1950s. We dismantled it last night to take photos of the marking on the handle. Any help will be appreciated. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted November 29 Report Posted November 29 The handle and nakago (tang) look short. How long is the cutting edge? Tanto are under 12" Wakizashi (shorter sword) - 24" - 12" Daito ( katana, uchi-katana, tachi, no-dachi ) - over 24" Helpful info on this site: http://japaneseswordindex.com/measure.htm Quote

Thank you for your help. It has a 16” cutting blade. 1 Quote
Geraint Posted November 29 Report Posted November 29 Dear Kramer. So you have a nice wakizashi in mounts. The seppa/washers are gold foiled which is a nice touch, I would guess that the habaki/blade collar is silver foiled, have a close look at the back where it meets the seppa to see if this is right. The tsuba is a Namban style piece and on the whole the mounts are quite nice. Enjoy the research journey! All the best. Quote
