Winchester Posted November 10, 2023 Report Posted November 10, 2023 I haven't a clue...it appears to be professionally framed. Any idea what the kanji says or feedback? Especially confusing is the gold colored background. Thanks in advance for your help; this is driving me nuts trying to figure it out. Quote
Toryu2020 Posted November 10, 2023 Report Posted November 10, 2023 Think its just decorative - might be an image of Kumagai and Atsumori? -t 1 Quote
Winchester Posted November 10, 2023 Author Report Posted November 10, 2023 Thank you, Thomas. I really appreciate it. It was purchased by me in a upscale suburb for a reasonable price and what made me question it was the fact that I could not find another example online and the label on the back has the gallery of where it was professionally framed. Wasn't expecting much, which sounds like it was prudent. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 I have never seen Japanese framed pictures. Maybe framed in the West? 1 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 Patricius, as fas as I know, the YUMI are the same as those used in KYUDO. 2 Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 12, 2023 Report Posted November 12, 2023 In terms of painting style it reminds me of Taisho and Showa period work. As an artefact it looks to me to be a print from a book, the back cover perhaps. The kanji reads 'Sō', meaning to dwell or the Sung Dynasty. I doubt that's an artists seal, possibly a publishers mark? 2 1 Quote
Larason2 Posted November 12, 2023 Report Posted November 12, 2023 Interesting. If you look closely, the images of the horses and riders appear cropped out. So probably cropped out of the picture of another work. I agree with Ford the back cover of a book. 1 Quote
