Tsuba Info Sought

Found this in local antique mall. It was so cheap I couldn't  leave it.IMG_0861.thumb.jpg.b68406840c1e22a308edfbf4c18d52f4.jpgIMG_0862.thumb.jpg.b213811056006a0ddfae2086e6667e34.jpg It measures 3 1/4 inches x 3 inches and even though labeled bronze it is magnetic and heavy iron. I'm 99% sure it's modern but wonder what it depicts  and why was it made?

Thanks for any help,

Howard Dennis

Dear Howard.

It doesn't matter how cheap it was, you could have left it!  Now you are stuck with it so yes, it is modern, see here for the theme, https://collections....aka-unknown-Japanese

I see that Mauro has got there before me.:)

All the best.

Thanks Geraint for responding and the link. It was cheaper than a good book and look at all I learn about the culture just because of it. It will also be a good replacement tsuba on a sword being sold rather than let a better tsuba go down the road.

Yes sorry Howard, these are cast and mass produced - and I do mean 'Mass'

Like a lot of cast pieces they come in various 'grades' some like the first one here are not so bad and have some form of extra finishing  - but others are 'paperweights' at best. [see the last]

I don't have proof but I think these were souvenirs possibly from a Temple visit. Most are described as "Daruma"  達磨

Thank You,

I thought there might be some other purpose than to fool someone into thinking it was old.
