Spartancrest Posted June 5, 2023 Report Posted June 5, 2023 A little Wak size, san mai - dirty and definitely beat up. Late night impulse buy. [Sorry only auction image, not very clear] https://www.jauce.com/auction/n1086826261 11 yen - too much? 11 yen is just short of 8 cents US. The trick is to be awake when the rest of the world is asleep! 6 1 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 5, 2023 Report Posted June 5, 2023 Couldn't you knock the dealer down to 10 yen, Dale? I am disappointed. This reminds me of when I was searching for those little earthenware saucers for oil lamps. At the time I couldn't find them anywhere, and then one day an antiques dealer had a pile at his stall. "¥100 each", he said. "Wow", I thought, my heart leaping, "just what I've been looking for, and a hundred yen, no worries!" So I bought five. Over coffee, I showed them to a collector friend. "Disgusting" he said, grabbing them from me and marching back to the dealer. "These should be 50 yen each!" he declared angrily, getting the alarmed dealer to back down. Still, Dale, I reckon you've won this round! 1 1 3 Quote

Steves87 Posted June 5, 2023 Report Posted June 5, 2023 we need a "deal of the decade" section, just so this can be on top! 5 Quote

[that is still within ten years] It did have a few problems but 1 yen was no obstacle to overcome! As you can see inflation has caught up with me and I now have to spend ten times as much to get a "bargain" 2 Quote
Spartancrest Posted June 7, 2023 Author Report Posted June 7, 2023 Just getting back to the 11 yen one - I found a mokko shaped version in much worse condition selling in the same week. https://www.jauce.com/auction/x1085113877 considerably more expensive. I also picked up another San Mai for 1300 yen, it is also not in great shape but compared to another also selling this week for close to ten times the price I am happy with what I got. I don't know if other examples compare but there looks like a 50/50 split between soldered and those with a fukurin - which would be the older method or would they be contemporaneous? 3 Quote
