Eds Posted March 17, 2023 Author Report Posted March 17, 2023 John What does the star indicate? Quote
John C Posted March 17, 2023 Report Posted March 17, 2023 The star would indicate a blade made by an RJT smith, which would probably mean it is a "gendaito" as opposed to a machine made blade (showato). At first glance, it appears to be a showato, however there were a couple of smiths named Kanemasa who made both gendaito and showato blades. John C. Quote
Eds Posted March 17, 2023 Author Report Posted March 17, 2023 Thank you for the clarification. I've seen it many times but wasn't sure Quote

Brian Posted March 22, 2023 Report Posted March 22, 2023 No proof, just gut feel, but I would guess a Showato, oil quenched. Quote
Swords Posted March 22, 2023 Report Posted March 22, 2023 Thanks Brian I was thinking Gendaito because I don’t see any dark areas in the hamon but It’s hard to see being so shiny You would know more than I Can anyone interpret the kanji on the flag? It looks like a martini glass with a wreath behind it Thanks to everyone for the all feed back on this thread Quote
SteveM Posted March 22, 2023 Report Posted March 22, 2023 Its a banner from some sports event (maybe a horserace), sponsored by a cosmetics manufacturer 優勝 - victory 賞 - award/prize クラブ化粧品総本店 - Club Cosmetics Headquarters クラブ美身クリーム懸賞記念 - Club Body Lotion Sweepstakes The thing that looks like a martini glass is a prize cup. There is no date on it. Probably from the war era, judging from the right-to-left writing, and the use of some old kanji. 1 Quote
Brian Posted March 22, 2023 Report Posted March 22, 2023 With the very rare exception, Gunto in those mounts are usually Showato...I'd want to see the lacquered darker saya to have more chance of it being a Gendaito. Just my 2c opinion, and I could easily be wrong. Also those dark patches would be more found on more active hamon with peaks, such as choji, sanbonsugi etc. Can't quite make out what this hamon is going. 2 Quote
