Kyūketsuki Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 Can anyone tell me what this kanji says? I believe it is the name of the owner of this naval sword i have recently aquierd. Also i have been told the mon is for the Iwase family. I not a sword expert but i do collect military weapons. Thanks to all. MSK Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 The kanji say "Fujita". John The crest (mon) is three Japanese cedars. Since the name of this tree in romanji is 'sugi' it is used by clans with sugi in their name ie. Uesugi, Sugi clans. It was also used by many others in various forms. Quote
Kyūketsuki Posted March 22, 2009 Author Report Posted March 22, 2009 Hey thanks! The Iwase name came from a guy at the Canadian sword collector site. Can he be also correct? Quote
tony edmunds Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Hi Hawley's Japanese Mons gives the three cedars (Sugi) mon family names as Togawa Fujibayashi Kano Kojima Omiwa Shinmi Iwase The small Hawley's Japanese crests gives Honda! Hope this helps Tony Quote

Kyūketsuki Posted March 24, 2009 Author Report Posted March 24, 2009 Heres a few more pics. Is there anyway to date the blade? Its unsigned, and i think by the way the rust looks it was made around the turn of the century {1800's/1900 } . Again im no expert and this is my first handmade blade, but i think the rust would be darker and more prevalent if it was 100's of years old. You guys tell me. Quote
Kyūketsuki Posted March 31, 2009 Author Report Posted March 31, 2009 Is there any way to date this sword blade? determine the maker? Connect it to the owner? Dose my research end here? THANKS Quote
Stephen Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 id date it before 1926 not much to tell with no name on the nakago, blade is out of polish to pinpoint it to one smith. Quote
