Richard Thomas Posted March 5, 2022 Report Posted March 5, 2022 Hey guys, when I bought this it was sold as ‘unsigned’ but found this on the inside of the lid… do you think this is an artist signature or factory seal or something else? cheers Rich 1 Quote
Richard Thomas Posted March 6, 2022 Author Report Posted March 6, 2022 For context I have added a couple of pics of the full inside lid and base .. I have no experience with maki-e, but from reading wonder if the subdued colour pallet / pigments may place this early/pre 19th century? .. or I’m way off base ..! 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 6, 2022 Report Posted March 6, 2022 Highly likely to be the lacquer artist's Mei and Kao, but it's frustratingly just on the edge of being legible. Not really my area, so I do not keep books on lacquer artists... Quote
Richard Thomas Posted March 6, 2022 Author Report Posted March 6, 2022 Thanks Piers, yes looked like a mei kao to me also, hopefully we have a lacquer expert that has all the answers 😬😂 Quote
k morita Posted March 10, 2022 Report Posted March 10, 2022 Hi, Nice Makie Box,and Waka poems. I also do not keep books on lacquer artists. The signature says 黙宗 (Mokusō + kao)(?). 1 Quote
