Mark C Posted November 23, 2021 Report Posted November 23, 2021 Hi All, Picked up this Wakizashi koshirae in fairly good condition. Would it be classed as a Handachi koshirae? and is there a name for the layered/surface finish on the fittings? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. All the best 1 Quote
Mark C Posted November 24, 2021 Author Report Posted November 24, 2021 Thanks Dale, After reading about Namban tsuba I can clearly see two dragons chasing a gem and the dragons are embedded in arabesque. Bit confused about Chinese/Japanese origins but I've only just started to learn about nanban tsuba so give it time. All the best 1 Quote
Geraint Posted November 24, 2021 Report Posted November 24, 2021 Dear Mark. That's really nice koshirae, the texturing of the iron and gold detailing it very pleasant. It does qualify as handachi though in rather refined form compared to the usual. The menuki, I think, are kylin and there is a lot of information here, https://www.mandarinmansion.com/article/nanban-tsuba about Namban tsuba. Your tsuba references the theme discussed here, All the best. Quote
Mark C Posted November 24, 2021 Author Report Posted November 24, 2021 Thanks Geraint, I was going to ask about the gate symbol on the tsuba but having read the posts I now know what it is. I've only had the koshirae three days and I've learnt so much already. All the best 1 Quote
Mark S. Posted November 25, 2021 Report Posted November 25, 2021 Interesting habaki. Shakudo? Seems like copper with patina worn away, but also some gold? Quote
Mark C Posted November 25, 2021 Author Report Posted November 25, 2021 HI Mark, Habaki seems to be foiled copper. Quote
