phil reid Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Hello , any idea on maker/ date on this tsuba , iron with wheat sheaf's and foliage in gilt and possibly silver accents - bird of prey hovering with gilt beak, obversestream with gilt accented foliage. Copper habaki (is it wind or clouds & rain/ catscratch?) Any help appreciated 1 Quote

Copper habaki (is it wind or clouds & rain/ catscratch?) Phil, it is difficult to see details on your photos. I don't see wheat sheaves and birds. It would perhaps be a good idea to dismount the TSUBA and make new photos. In any case, it looks like an AIZU SHOAMI TSUBA, probably from mid-EDO JIDAI. The HABAKI is nice, NEKO-GAKI in combination with 'clouds' do indeed give an impression of rain. Quote
Tanto54 Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 The habaki is probably rain and water (instead of cloud) - these swirls are a standard stylization for water (and in light of the proper orientation of a habaki, if it were a cloud, it would be under the rain...) Quote
phil reid Posted June 24, 2021 Author Report Posted June 24, 2021 Morning Gents, hopefully these photos are better. cheers, Phil 1 Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 24, 2021 Report Posted June 24, 2021 This tsuba is a typical Sansui style, perhaps Mito or Aizushoami. Rocks, foliage, water and mountains with wildlife and people common. Here is a Mito tsuba recently acquired for comparison. John Mito geese farmers.psd 1 Quote
