 Hi guys,

I’m up for my very first buy in terms of Japanese sword art.

i have found a fantastic tsuba I just need to have. I just love it. But I need your help translating the mei and what you would recommend me to offer for it.

I can’t understand that I haven’t been collecting this beautiful pieces of art before.

Please help me.

Dear Fred.

Welcome to NMB.

The tsuba is signed, "Echizen no ju Kinai saku".  If you do a search you will soon discover that this is a prolific school and that this is one of their stock designs.  It has a shakudo pillow inserted for the kodzuka

and the zogan, gold details, appear to be complete.

If this is your first buy then a trawl through online sites will quickly tell you the range of prices.  It looks like quite a good example of it's type and it is not a bad place to start.

All the best.

Thx, I’m just afraid to get carried away with its beauty and pay to much or just think it’s worth more because it looks so nice.

Hi Freddie,

Go to this website and do a search on “kinai”. You’ll find a number of examples that have sold previously so pick ones with a similar design to get an idea of prices. You might need to refer to a currency converter.

🙌👏

The second post was the exact same tsuba! Go figure.

I bow humbly for the help!

That is how easy things are when you have the knowledge. Love this forum. :-)

Same pattern/style. Not the SAME tsuba. They worked off pattern books etc, and you will find multiple examples of the same tsuba.
This one is decent. Not high grade, not junk. Just a nice middle of the road tsuba. I would guess at about $300 to $350 at a wild guess.
