John A Stuart Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Hi All, I want to share some pics of various crafts that are still active. It includes a knife maker, doll maker, lantern maker, weaver and sumi and inkstone makers. I talked to the ink maker and asked if it was still made with ground charcoal and fish glue. He said yes, but, I'm sure there is more to it. The inkstone carver said the stone comes from China and is fairly hard to carve. Looked equivalent to soapstone to me. The weaver is quite skilled. His cloth sized for obi was exquisite. This is a new area just built beside the Asakusa Kannon Temple like an old style trade fair, replica period stalls. I do not know if it will be a permanent fixture. I hope you enjoy seeing these. John Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Hi John. The knifemaker is also a Bonsai-tools maker ? I've an handmade Masakuni set of 10 that was outrageously costly 20 years ago, but is still working as the first day. Things that goes from a generation to the other... Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 Anything edged Carlo. I watched him rivet a pair of shears and sharpen a huge brush clearing mattock type tool. John Quote
Jean Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Sharp eyes Carlo , I saw them too but did not think anybodyelse shall notice them. I bought my wife a Gingko a few years ago. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 I bought my wife a Gingko a few years ago. Wise choice. No parasites, no need for fungicide, great resistance to air pollution, cutting of roots only every 3/4 years or maybe more, fantastic color in autumn. Quote
