Brian Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Have an acquaintance there who is a militaria collector but doesn't know much about Japanese swords. He has a Shin Gunto that he can't seem to take apart. Can't get the hang of removing the mekugi and we would both like to know more about the sword. Anyone able to meet up with him and assist to see what he has? Brian Quote
Babu Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 It's possible it's the screw with a reverse thread so unscrew clockwise. Quote
Brian Posted August 24, 2020 Author Report Posted August 24, 2020 Regular type 94 or 98. Wooden peg. Possibly not well aligned. Hard to tell from pics. But it’s not a screw. Quote
mtexter Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 I assume he's tried a few things already, but just in case it's helpful - The first time I took out a mekugi, (a similar situation to this actually), I (very carefully) used a punch and a hammer to get it loosened and out. In hindsight, maybe a bit reckless, but effective! This was before I knew about the proper tools of course. A setup like this: Quote
Brian Posted August 25, 2020 Author Report Posted August 25, 2020 Is Northampton really that remote? Any UK members willing to communicate with him via phone maybe then, and talk him through it? Quote
paulb Posted August 25, 2020 Report Posted August 25, 2020 Brian give your contact my mobile number and I will try and put him in touch with someone. There and no Northampton is far from remote it is within London commuter belt cheers 1 Quote
