Have an acquaintance there who is a militaria collector but doesn't know much about Japanese swords. He has a Shin Gunto that he can't seem to take apart. Can't get the hang of removing the mekugi and we would both like to know more about the sword. Anyone able to meet up with him and assist to see what he has?

I assume he's tried a few things already, but just in case it's helpful - The first time I took out a mekugi, (a similar situation to this actually), I (very carefully) used a punch and a hammer to get it loosened and out.  In hindsight, maybe a bit reckless, but effective!  This was before I knew about the proper tools of course.

A setup like this:

Is Northampton really that remote?
Any UK members willing to communicate with him via phone maybe then, and talk him through it?
