Geraint Posted July 26, 2020 Report Posted July 26, 2020 Dear Brodie. The starting point is what you can see in hand. The blade appears to be suriage, it is possible that the lower mekugi ana was the original, would you agree? If so what would the original length of the blade have been and what sort of sori would it have had? The original shape of the sword and length are the surest indicators of age. What about the boshi? If it is midare komi then probably Koto or Shinshinto. Without that information all we are doing is guessing based on what we can see which isn't much. Hope that helps you think about the sword. All the best. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 26, 2020 Report Posted July 26, 2020 Geraint is right on, but what else can you see? Are the ana drilled or chiseled? Does the hamon continue unbroken, into the boshi? How about the condition of the nakago? Your closeup photos aren't sharp enough for us to tell anything significant about the hada or hamon, but with blade in hand, you've got all the clues. Quote
Alex A Posted July 26, 2020 Report Posted July 26, 2020 This might help. https://Japan-forward.com/the-changes-in-the-shape-of-the-Japanese-sword/ Quote
Jacques Posted July 26, 2020 Report Posted July 26, 2020 Measurements (nagasa, sori, mihaba, kasane) ? Without them it's impossible to determine when this sword was made. At first glance, i would say Bizen sue Koto. 1 Quote
