Guest nickn Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 please could someone give me some info on this tsuba age school etc and whether it would be possible to replace the missing kiri mon and at what cost Quote
Guest nickn Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 anyone? i guess ford would be the person to ask about getting the missing kiri mon replaced Quote
Ford Hallam Posted October 17, 2008 Report Posted October 17, 2008 Hi Nick, no not bad...in fact this is a not uncommon problem with these sorts of tsuba. I may actually have some cast fine silver copies of this mon...they'd need to be gilded and applied somehow ( the originals were soft soldered on after the patination.) but those are just minor details. I'll have a dig around in my scrap box and see what I can come up with. In the meantime can you give me the exact length, top to bottom, of the mon, and how many are needed... regards, Ford Quote

Guest nickn Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 sorry to be a nuicance but does anyone have any info on this tsuba? the shakudo looks ,at least to me, to be of high quality Quote
John A Stuart Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Hi Nick, See here http://www.shakudoya.com/T108.html and here http://www.shakudoya.com/T109.html or http://www.shakudoya.com/T111.html Ko-kinko and Goto both possibilities, or in style of, What do you think? John Quote
Guest nickn Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 mine looks more goto in style but goes it show the quality of a goto piece? Quote
John A Stuart Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Well, There are artisans that can make tsuba of high quality, but, this seems to be within the parameters of Goto work IMHO. John Quote
Brian Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 What puts me off a Goto call is the quality of the nanako. It is well done, but not perfect. Lines aren't perfectly straight and on close examination it just doesn't ooze perfection. Still nice work, but I would be more inclined to say Goto style, or waki Goto? Brian Quote
John A Stuart Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hi Brian, You may be right. The kirimon are identical in construction though. I am not sure how prevalent having the nanako done by specialists was, but, it may be that. Anyway, I wonder about attributing lesser works as waki-Goto. Waki (side) is still Goto though not in the direct transmission mainline and the work seems to me to be equivalent. However the mainline masters have a premium attached due to desirability. Would enjoy comments on this waki thing. John Quote
