TheGermanBastard Posted May 9, 2019 Report Posted May 9, 2019 I would appreciate kind helpf with the translation of these two Tsubas signatures please. Thank you Quote
SteveM Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 Top tsuba Right side 江都住 Kōto-jū (meaning Tokyo) Left side mostly unreadable, but judging from the above I would say 橋本正斎 Hashimoto Masanari. Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted May 10, 2019 Author Report Posted May 10, 2019 Hello Steve, thank you very much! I think you are most probably right as I just found a similar Tsuba by that smith. Thank you! Do you also have any idea on the other signature by chance? Thank you Quote
SteveM Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 The other one looks like 美春 (Yoshiharu, Miharu?) , but no search of that name turned up anything interesting. Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted May 10, 2019 Author Report Posted May 10, 2019 Thank you Steve. The Masanari I think is a good match for the mentioned smith. On the 2nd one I still have to do some cleaning. It is a huge Tsuba. Quote
uwe Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 The only guy I could find... Yoshiharu (美春)late Edo to Meiji – Edo – Tamagawa school and student of Ishiguro Masayoshi (石黒政美) – gō Jushōsai (寿松斎) ?? Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted May 10, 2019 Author Report Posted May 10, 2019 Hello Uwe! Thank you very much! Much appreciated! That is most helpfull! Is he listed in the Haynes Index? The frontside of the Tsuba looks bad in my images due to being olied while I am cleaning it ... however I must say that I do like it very much and it is an impressive peice in hands Quote
uwe Posted May 11, 2019 Report Posted May 11, 2019 Hello Luis, I don’t have Haynes, but found an artist with this name (and spelling) in Markus book! Not sure if it is the guy in question?! I’m afraid we have to translate the right side of your tsuba Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted May 11, 2019 Author Report Posted May 11, 2019 Hello Uwe, the right side I belive is tough. Looks like gras script ... The tsuba meanwhile cleaned nicely. 1 Quote
Lance Posted May 12, 2019 Report Posted May 12, 2019 Grass script, the way dragon's face is carved , and patchy gold reminds me of Jakushi school? Couple links from Grey Doffin's website http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/tsuba-%26-kodogu/j137-signed-jakushi-tsuba# http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/search/node/Jakushi Regards, Lance Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted May 12, 2019 Author Report Posted May 12, 2019 Helo Lance, thank you very much! Yes, this must definately be Jakushi school. Thank you for having pointed this out. Now if somebody would be able to nail this to a specific maker it is much apprecited. Quote
