Yves55 Posted June 1, 2017 Report Posted June 1, 2017 I hate to touch old (?) pieces, but the back side of this tsuba may need some restoration... What do you think? For me it's like a black lacquer. Any suggestions? 82 x 74 x 3,5 mm - iron - 138 gr. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted June 1, 2017 Report Posted June 1, 2017 Yves, interesting TSUBA, probably steel MOKUME. These are normally not lacquered, so I think this could be accidentally applied paint. If so, strong chemical solvents like Acetone may help without affecting the steel. If this is URUSHI, it is much more resistent against solvents. If nothing helps, there is still Ford Hallam! Quote
Ford Hallam Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 Yves could to take and post some images of the rim, please? 1 Quote
Yves55 Posted June 2, 2017 Author Report Posted June 2, 2017 Two pictures of the rim: Thickness: 3,45 > 4,00 mm Quote
Yves55 Posted June 2, 2017 Author Report Posted June 2, 2017 And also seen from the four sides: Quote
Ford Hallam Posted June 2, 2017 Report Posted June 2, 2017 Hi Yves thanks for the additional images. I would think the black is some sort of paint and not urushi so it should come off quite easily with a regular paint rmover. This will not harm to iron patina. The patina is not in great condition really but once the paint is off you could try rubbing the surface with a damp cottonwool ball or cottonwool earbud and some bicarbonte of soda. This won't damage any real original patina but will gently wear away loose red rust. Rinse in warm water as you proceed and dry well when you stop. 3 Quote
Yves55 Posted June 2, 2017 Author Report Posted June 2, 2017 Thanks! I'll try the paint remover, cottonwool and the soda one of these days and post a 'clean' picture. PS: you just got your 2500th post. Congrats! 1 Quote
Yves55 Posted July 5, 2017 Author Report Posted July 5, 2017 And now, as promised, the slightly cleaned version: And with another exposure: Quote
