In pictures, two large tachi tsubas from the heianjo school (1400's-1500's)

In my opinion i would guess it depends on wheter its judged with an historic or an artistic point of view,

What do you think?

Thanks

Are you referring to aging in the Wabi Sabi sense? If so aging contributes to a things beauty, however, the form must retain the original artistic integrity as well. There is a line, subjectively and objectively. John

Yes, wouldn't any aging at all change the image an artist had in mind for it's piece and this it artistic integrity?

according to the wabi sabi aesthetic, time and imperfection adds to the beauty. But at what point it goes from antique to junk?

I think it depends on the eyes of the beholder; from an historic point of view, there is no junk

In my opinion both of these tsuba are historic artefacts. Neither is represenatative of art in the sense that art might be the personal creative expression of the maker.

Both are essentially the same type of object and bear the same generic decoration. One has been better cared for or has been at some point been carefully restored. The other, the less well cared for one, looks presently to be in poor condition but were it to recieve suiatable restoration attention I see no obvious reason why it couldn't actually be a slightly more interesting example (than the other) of this type of tsuba.
